Forbidden Ar III 7136 A and forbidden S III 9069 A in the metal-poor blue compact irregular galaxies I Zw 18 and II Zw 40 were measured via near-IR spectroscopy, at high altitude and low humidity to reduce telluric absorption. The ratio of the line intensities is found to be insensitive to ionization structure, being determined almost wholly by the electron temperature and the ratio of the number abundances of argon and sulfur. I Zw 18, the SMC the LMC Galactic H II regions, Galactic planetary nebulae, and the solar system, all have n(Ar)/n(S) within 10 percent of 0.21, with no evidence of any trend with metallicity. However, the result for II Zw 40 is inexplicably higher by a factor of 2.
