A morphological description and CCD photometric information for a sample of 24 low luminosity radio galaxies with radio jets are presented. It is concluded that Fanaroff-Riley type I low luminosity radio galaxies inhabit regions of higher galaxy density than radio-quiet ellipticals and powerful radio sources, and are more luminous in the optical than powerful radio galaxies. The total radio power and the environment play a role in determining the size of the radio jets. Large jets are present only in the powerful radio galaxies. A large fraction of the galaxies show morphological peculiarities in the optical, suggesting gravitational interaction and merging with nearby companions. Low luminosity radio galaxies could be precursors of cD galactic clusters, on the basis of their X-ray emission, possibilities of merging actions, presence of envelopes, the local environment, their luminosity, and the presence of dumbbell systems and multiple nuclei.
