A summary of observations of the two-ribbon solar flare event occurring at N 12 deg, L 160 deg on May 13, 1981, is given. The observations were carried out using the 14 cm chromosphere telescope and the 3 cm radio telescope of the Purple Mountain Observatory. The most striking feature of the flare event was the H-alpha flare which began at about 03.38 UT, and the double-ribbon structure which formed at about 03.46 UT. The cm radio burst flux beginning at 03.33 UT showed only slow, stepwise increases of half an hour until the impulsive phase. Each step in the radio flux corresponded to a variation in the H-alpha flare. It is suggested that the radio and H-alpha emissions during the event originated in the same thermal source. The similar behavior of the radio and H-alpha emissions is explained within the framework of Hyder's (1967) phenomenological model. Rough estimates of the energy density, prominence height, and the infall matter at different radio increments are listed in a table. The appearance of a single peak structure in the radio burst at 04.11 UT is discussed, and some physical mechanisms for the covering of the sunspot shortly after 04.13 are proposed.
