Infrared speckle interferometry of NGC 2024 No. 2 at 4.64 μm resolves the source and substantiates a complete model of a central star surrounded by an optically thin dust shell. The authors deduce the interstellar extinction, the temperature and the radius of the inner shell. A mass loss picture is proposed, where carbon and silicate grains form the condensing phase.
