The NASA 2.4 m Space Telescope (ST) will be an earth-orbiting astronomical observatory which will make a dominant contribution to the understanding of the content, structure, scale, and evolution of the universe. ESA's contribution to this project will include the Faint Object Camera (FOC) one of the four axial instruments carried by the ST. The FOC is an imaging camera provided with a photon-counting detector which will fully exploit the near diffraction-limited performance of the ST and will be able to detect objects 50 times fainter than those observable with the most powerful earthbound telescope. The scientific rationale, the design, and the performance expectations of the FOC are described.
