The physical significance of recent radar studies of auroral irregularities at different frequency bands in the VHF and UHF range is discussed, with emphasis on Doppler spectral studies. The results suggest that important differences exist between the 50-MHz equatorial and auroral backscatter processes, and that the role of altitude and of electron density in the generation and saturation of instabilities is much more important in the auroral than in the equatorial E region. The need for a general unified theory of radio aurora incorporating wave energy propagation characteristics and new nonlinear saturation mechanisms is emphasized.
