The relevance of lunar highland rock ages to highland and basin stratigraphy is discussed. It is found that radiometric age data for highland rocks do not in any simple way reflect the time of excavation of the major circular basins from which they are believed to originate. Instead, many rocks are of a more local origin and, moreover, radiometric clocks are not necessarily reset at the occasion of the basin forming impact. It is also determined that the widely accepted assumption of thick hot ejecta blankets around the Serenitatis Basin (and the other basins) has to be rejected.
