The status of the experimental data on extensive air showers is reviewed, and the problem of air shower simulation is examined in detail. A most likely model of high-energy interaction and particle production as deduced from present air shower simulations, covering a primary energy range 10,000 to 10,000,000 GeV, that are based on nucleon-nucleon, pion-nucleon, and kaon-nucleon interactions, in conjunction with experimental air shower data, is a two-component model with distinct clustering properties, i.e. an isobar-fireball (or fragmentation and pionization) model.
