The role of shear motion of a magnetic field in the formation of prominences is examined. The physical phenomena which result when the foot-points of a two-dimensional dipole potential field undergo shearing are determined. The results show that a mushroom-shaped flow is generated, sometimes with a depression of the arch top. The linear asymptotic solution for the early stage of flow evolution shows that the flow amplitude grows exponentially with time. It is suggested that the arch top depression is due to the interaction of the magnetic buoyance and the field deformation damping force.
