Waves propagate very differently in the dustless and dusty regions of stellar outflows. To drive the observed winds of evolved giants and supergiants with waves, substantial dissipation must occur near the sonic points. Wave propagation and dissipation in the dust-free and dusty regions in the Alpha Ori outflow are considered, and it is argued that some waves which propagate without prohibitive losses out to the zone of dust formation are dissipated fairly rapidly in the dusty region. Because chemical and thermal conditions should be changing in the zones of dust formation, it is reasonable to conjecture that they lie near the sonic points.
