Several diagrams are constructed where theoretical evolutionary tracks for planetary nebula nuclei are confronted with the distributions of observational points from a sample of about 200 planetary nebulae. A careful analysis of these diagrams lead to the conclusion that hydrogen burning models for the planetary nebula nuclei reproduce better the observations than models which burn initially helium. This implies that the formation of planetary nebulae is not favored by a helium shell flash. As for the masses of the planetry nebula nuclei, the bulk is found to lie between 0.55 and 0.65 solar mass.
