The ISEE-1 Ion Composition Experiment detects ionospheric and solar wind ions streaming tailward with the same parallel velocity in the open magnetic field lines regions of the geomagnetotail, at distances from 10 Re to 20 Re. This is an effect of the so called magnetospheric mass spectrometer which organizes these streams, allowing those ion having a certain flow velocity to get at a certain point down the tail. This effect mixes solar wind and ionospheric particles, thus filling the plasma mantle and the lobe region with a multicomponent plasma, cold, collimated, flowing with several energies, one for every ion species involved in this process.
