Extended celestial background IR emission, which encompasses the zodiacal background, the large discrete sources in the galaxy, and the interstellar dust, presents a varied field for a space-based cryogenic, long-wavelength IR telescope system. Dust arcs, comet trails, and asteroids in the solar system constitute moving sources of spurious signals for area surveys. The highly structured and filigreed background due to structure in molecular clouds, H II regions, and IR cirrus could represent a source of scan noise and spurious signals, due to field rotation and scan aspect.
