Effects of possible distortions of the shape of a spacecraft surface on torque are evaluated. Distortions considered include helical distortion, bending of the rotational axis without change in the transverse profile, and warping of the afterbody profile. The dynamics of a spacecraft descending into the Martian atmosphere is analyzed, with attention given to longitudinal angular velocity, trajectories, and angles of attack. It is shown that deceleration in the highly rarefied Martian atmosphere requires the construction of a frontal shield with large aerodynamic drag and that stability of uncontrolled motion about the center of mass is important for such a configuration.
