Based on proposed models for the tidal spin-up and magnetic braking of stars with a convective outer envelope the author suggests that the rotation of secondaries in cataclysmic variables is not necessarily synchronized with the orbital revolution. This may provide an explanation for the observed large range in the mass transfer rate (at the same orbital period) of cataclysmic variables above the period gap.
