Exact results are derived for calculating Compton heating and cooling in optically thin gases. For electron temperatures less than 50 keV an asymptotic expansion is provided which is free of integrals and special functions which can be used to calculate Compton heating and cooling for photon spectra extending up to 5 MeV with an accuracy of better than 3 per cent.
