Selective sensors of the energy spectrometer on the Prognoz 7 and 8 satellites were used to measure velocity and temperature jumps of the proton and alpha-particle components of the solar wind during the intersection of a near-earth shock wave. Energy-balance considerations were used to determine the electrostatic-potential jump at the shock front, which amounted (on the average) to 300 V.
