Simultaneous spectroscopy and photometry have both revealed a 0.12894-day period for the emission-line object AM Her. The X-ray data are modulated with the same period, confirming the identification with the high-galactic-latitude X-ray source 3U 1809+50. It is shown that the large velocity variations probably arise in a strong gas flow between the components and in an off-axis hot spot. It is not possible to derive the masses directly, as neither star itself is spectroscopically visible. Other arguments suggest that both components have low masses (probably around 0.4 and 1 solar mass).
