An analysis of the Balmer and Paschen decrements of Nova Delphini shows that this nova is surrounded by a dust envelope. Observations of the Novae Serpentis, Herculis, and Persei lead to the conclusion that all novae are surrounded by a dust envelope with radii of five times ten to the fourteenth to five times ten to the fifteenth cm. The particles making up the envelope have radii of the order of 0.10 micron before the explosion; their radii are subsequently increased by collisions of particles and matter ejected in the course of the explosion. The properties of the particles are similar to those of the interstellar medium. To eliminate the reddening effect of the circumstellar cloud, the H beta flux must be multiplied by a factor of the order of 30. It is hypothesized that the solid particles of the circumstellar cloud are formed by condensation of gas ejected by the nova in an earlier explosion or explosions.
