RECENT planetary probe measurements within the atmosphere and in the near vicinity of Venus1,2 make possible further interesting correlations between the physical conditions and the chemistry of the atmosphere and lithosphere. It is particularly interesting to see whether the recently reported abundances of HCl and HF in the atmosphere3 are compatible with the chemical interaction model which was proposed earlier4,5 to account for the other atmospheric constituents.
