The authors have derived cluster metallicities from measurements of absorption features in low-dispersion spectra acquired at the AAT for five globular clusters associated with the giant elliptical galaxy M87, a member of the Virgo Cluster. They have augmented the sample to six through the recalibration and inclusion of the results presented by Racine, Oke, and Searle (1978) for three clusters, two of which are common to both studies. The mean metallicity in the total sample is [Fe/H] = -0.5±0.4, considerably more metal-rich than the average (≡-1.2) for clusters in the Galaxy. Moreover, it appears that a significant fraction of the globular clusters in M87 are more metal-rich than any known in the Galaxy. There is no correlation of cluster metallicity with projected galactocentric distance.
