A growing amount of observational evidence, supported by semiquatitative analytical and numerical models, appears to indicate the importance of magnetic field reconnection in coronal dynamical processes such as solar flares and coronal mass transients. A review of some of this evidence is conducted, and magnetic reconnection in global coronal structures is briefly discussed. A simple loop flare model is examined, taking into account an occurrence of simple-loop flares in three stages as the emerging magnetic flux interacts with the overlying field, and soft X-ray maps obtained with the aid of the HXIS instrument aboard SMM. Attention is also given to a two-ribbon flare and the evolution of global magnetic fields.
