Tümer et al. (1984) have detected soft γ-rays in the range 0.3 < Eγ < 30 MeV from the Vela pulsar, PSR 0833-45. Their measurements are consistent with a differential number spectrum of slope 1.5. This value was predicted on theoretical grounds, and is expected to occur between two characteristic photon energies, related univocally to the location of the active region within the pulsar's magnetosphere. The author stresses the importance of such spectral signatures, and points out ways of exploiting to the fullest extent their information content.
