A detailed stellar luminosity function for the Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy was derived by analyzing the recent deep VR CCD photometry of Mighell (1989) with the Lambda method. The stellar luminosity function for Carina reaches V = 24.8 mag and contains 2964 stars in a 16.82 sq arcmin field. The completeness matrix was derived and calibrated by using 36 artificial-star tests involving the photometric reduction of 8400 artificial stellar images. The quality of the derived stellar luminosity function demonstrates that the Lambda method can be a powerful tool for the production of detailed and accurate stellar luminosity functions for Local Group galaxies.
