The accumulated intergalactic Lyman continuum opacity problem is analyzed in the light of the current information on the statistics of quasar absorption lines. The existing data on the statistics of the two relevant classes of quasar absorption systems, Lyman forest systems and Lyman limit systems, are summarized. The essential features and statistics of the accumulated continuum and line absorption due to these two classes of absorbers are discussed using general analytical expressions for the average and statistical fluctuations in the cumulative optical depth and transmission. A detailed Monte Carlo simulations of the combined opacity due to both classes of systems are carried out, and results are presented. It is concluded that though the accumulated intergalactic Lyman continuum opacity out to large redshifts presents an obstacle, the He II equivalent of the Gunn-Peterson test for intergalactic helium can be carried out with the Hubble Space Telescope.
