Cosmologists have become used to the idea that most of the Universe does not consist of ordinary `baryonic' dark matter. In this article the main evidence for the idea of dark matter is reviewed: cosmology (chiefly the cosmic microwave background anisotropy spectrum), and galaxy dynamics (including some surprising results based on planetary nebulae). An alternative interpretations of the data, in which the dark matter is fictitious and due to a modification of the law of gravity, is also discussed. Possible dynamical measurements that might distinguish between dark matter and modified gravity are reviewed.
