Polarization has been considered for a long time a distinctive feature of blazars. I will discuss polarimetric observations of blazar jets at low wavelengths (optical, IR, radio). Such observations give insight on the structure of the outflow and its associated magnetic field. I will then address the prospect of high energy polarization (X-rays and gamma-rays) detection and their role in a better understanding of the blazar sequence and the emission mechanism responsible for high energy photons from blazars.
