In this note, it is pointed out that removal of inner electrons by photoionization can produce ultraviolet emission lines of observable intensity. In the case of C(+) + h(nu) = more than C(2+) + e, ionization by photons with energies greater than 31 eV produces ions which then preferentially populate the excited C III 3P state. Calculations show that photoproduction of lines such as C III 1909 A can be competitive with collisional excitation in low-temperature, low-ionization nebulae such as H II regions, and could affect abundance or ionization studies. In general, this production mechanism should be considered whenever the ultraviolet lines have intensities a few tens of percent of H-beta.
