The concept of quasi-inerial tracking has been developed to aid the determination of satellite position and intersatellite range. It applies in particular where there is only limited knowledge of the satellite(s) absolute position. The ground station tracking antenna is driven in a pseudo-programmed mode so that it tracks a fixed inertial point in the orbit, allowing the satellite(s) to fly through the beam. This method was successfully used in 1984 to determine the intersatellite range between two AMPTE satellites, and to reacquire the IRAS satellite whose orbit had not been calculated for eleven months. Design mathematics and results of the quasi-inerial tracking method are presented.
