The theory of time-dependent accretion disks is reviewed. Dwarf nova outbursts are discussed. Predictions of the disk instability and the red-star instability models are compared with the observational evidence. It is found that both models have their successes and failures. In general, optical observations are in better agreement with the disk instability model, ultraviolet observations with the red-star instability.
