The data from Mariner 10 on Mercury is analyzed. The magnetic field intensity is several hundred nT. The comparison of properties for Earth and Mercury indicate that the field strength is more determined by rotation rate then any other property such as heat or size of the core. The mechanisms suggested are either a dynamo like the one in the Earth or a residual magnetization (or both).
