Difficulties inherent in soft x ray detection of classical novae during outburst is described. The advent of spaceborne focusing telescopes has elininated some of these difficulties although x ray absorbtion by cold interstellar gas remains a problem. Observations of three of the brightest novae whose outburst stage coincided with the lifetime of the EXOSAT satellite are described. A graph presenting the thin Lexan counting rates for the three novae as a function of elapsed time since optical maximum is provided. How these x ray observations will contribute to better understanding novae phenomena is discussed.
