Data from the ONR-602 experiment, obtained in a low altitude, polar orbit are being analyzed to investigate the composition, intensity levels and time variations of energetic charged particles both trapped within the Earth's magnetosphere and incident upon the magnetosphere from interplanetary space, particularly solar flare particles. The effort involves both data analysis/interpretation and detailed modeling of the near-Earth environment. The research focusses on the global zones of low energy particle precipitation, including the South Atlantic Anomaly region from which access to the radiation belts is obtained, and the solar particle events of May to Nov., 1982. In addition, scientific/technical support is being provided to the ONR-604 experiment to be launched on the CRRES mission. The results of these investigations will enhance our understanding of the geospace radiation environment and its effects on men, materials and electronic systems in space.
