The possible role of the neutral atmosphere in the interaction between the solar wind and Mars is examined. Attention is given to situations where the neutral atmosphere is included in the interaction process even in the presence of the intrinsic magnetic field of the planet, e.g., in the case of high dynamic pressure of the solar wind or in the case of the near-equatorial location of cusps in the Martian magnetosphere. Numerical calculations indicated that the loading of the solar wind due to photoionization will move the front from the planet.
