The authors report the results of HEAO 1 hard X-ray observations of the five brightest X-ray BL Lacertae objects: PKS 0548-322, Mrk 421, 2A 1219+305, Mrk 501 and PKS 2155-304. The observations covered the energy range 15 - 165 keV and the time span of 1977 August to 1978 December. No detections were made at the 3σ level for any objects, and 2σ upper limits to the inferred flux in six broad energy bands are given. A comparison of these limits with published results shows that Mrk 421 varies considerably on time scales of years in its hard component. Similarly large variations are indicated for PKS 2155-304.
