The microlensing scenario for the BL Lac object AO 235+164 is analyzed. Some severe problems are uncovered which indicate that the outbursts of AO 235+164 cannot be explained by gravitational microlensing. The strongest argument against microlensing is the formation of new VLBI components corresponding to each strong outburst. These outbursts thus appear to be an intrinsic phenomenon of the source.
