Thermoluminescence (TL) is used to determine the temperature gradient produced in the Kirin, China, meteorite by heating during atmospheric passage. The experimentally determined gradient of about 51 C/mm is more than twice as large as previously published values for other meteorites and agrees more closely with the theoretical predictions of a steady-state continuous ablation model. The normalized TL measured in the interior of the fragment is nearly constant over a distance of two centimeters.
