The arguments put forward earlier in the century in support of the existence of interstellar dust are recapitulated. It is noted that interstellar absorption as revealed by star counts and selective reddening proved the existence of interstellar dust, which, it is explained, is also responsible for absorption in the dark nebulae. It is also pointed out that the action of the dust consists mainly in diffraction, affecting the direction of light which passes not only through the physical cross section of the particle but also that passing outside it in the near vicinity. In the absence of true absorption, the energy of the scattered light may be conserved (dielectric particles), or it may be decreased by absorption (carbon and metallic particles).
