In a recent paper Lucey has demonstrated that a more accurate Lσ relation is obtained if a small fixed metric size aperture magnitude is used to define L, rather than a near total isophotal magnitude. This is shown to be expected on physical grounds since the aperture magnitude essentially measures the quantity Iere which is directly proportional to σ2(M/L)-1. The use of Iere as a distance indicator with minimum scatter is therefore suggested.
