The young galactic cluster NGC 663 has been observed on a series of objective-prism plates obtained during the period from 1946 to 1975, in order to establish the percentage of Be stars in this cluster and to determine the frequency of 27 H-alpha emission-line variables. The results indicate that H-alpha emission is firmly established in 18 stars reported in more than one independent survey, that the Be stars are confined to spectral types B5 and earlier, and that at least one-third of the early B-type cluster members have exhibited Be characteristics at one time or another. It is also found that large-amplitude variations in the strength of the H-alpha emission occurred during the three-decade interval in one-third of the Be stars on a time scale of several years. A color-magnitude diagram is plotted for the confirmed emission-line in NGC 663.
