Numerical-model results are presented on electron-density stratifications in the daytime equatorial F-region. It is shown that the stratifications appear during the attenuation of vertical drift due to the formation of a new maximum at lower altitudes. Attention is given to the latitudinal extent of the stratifications and to the dependence of their lifetime on diffusion and wind entrainment. The numerical results are found to agree well with experimental data.
