Several authors have found a significantly lower oxygen abundance in the outer solar atmosphere (by at least a factor of two) than was determined for the photosphere. The influence of diffusion on line intensities is investigated. Intensities are calculated for oxygen and magnesium lines (O IV 554 A, O VI 1032 A, Mg X 625 A), and it is shown that neglect of diffusion can distort the derived O/Mg abundance
