The importance of magnetic fields in protoplanetary nebulae (PPN) and planetary nebulae (PN) is examined. The existence of a dense ring and of two symmetrical lobes in GL 618, Red Rectangle, M1-91, M2-9, NGC 2346 finds a natural explanation in the presence of an azimuthal magnetic field, concentrated in the equatorial region. A typical value and the orientation of magnetic field lines are determined. From an evolutionary point of view, it is shown that the present model is joint with a continuous steady mass loss (Kwok, 1983), and thus is incompatible with a sudden ejection of PPN by the progenitor (Tuchman, 1983).
