The reddening and the polarization of the Herbig Be star HD 200775, which is surrounded by the reflection nebula NGC 7023, have been determined and separated into intrinsic and interstellar components. From the authors' uvby photometry and published results they get E(B-V) ≈ 0m.1 and 0m.45 resp., for the intrinsic and interstellar reddening. A reddening map based on star counts (Sandell and Johansson, 1982) is used to derive the relation between 13CO column density and extinction: N(13CO) = 3.1×1015AV. From 5-colour polarimetry the intrinsic polarization in the blue turns out to be about 0.4%, and the wavelength dependence resembles that of normal Be stars. The maximum interstellar polarization is 0.88% at λmax = 0.532 μm, indicating that the size distribution of the particles in the cloud responsible for the optical extinction and polarization is rather similar to that of the surrounding interstellar medium. For stars in the vicinity (diameter of the field ≡4°) a relation pmax(%) = (3.3±0.5)E(B-V) is obtained.
