Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey (HerMES) is a guaranteed-time key programme of the Herschel/SPIRE consortium, aiming at studying the formation and evolution of infrared galaxies throughout cosmic history. HerMES consists of a nested set of fields covering an unprecedented depth and width adequate for measuring the bolometric emission of infrared galaxies, studying the evolution of their luminosity function, measuring their clustering properties, and probing populations of galaxies below the confusion limit through lensing and statistical techniques. HerMES is closely coordinated with the PACS Evolutionary Probe survey. It will make maximum use of ancillary data coming from radio to X-ray surveys to facilitate redshift determination and rapid identification of rare objects, and understand the relationship between thermal dust emission and other emission mechanisms. HerMES will have a great legacy value, providing a rich data set for the astronomical community to mine for the years to come.
