The recent detection of several transiting extra-solar planets is giving for the first time the possibility of measuring the physical parameters of giant planets orbiting other stars. In this paper we present a series of spectroscopic studies aimed at analyzing the properties of the stars hosting the newly discovered transiting planets. The results are used to improve the determination of the planetary masses and radii. The measured stellar observables (e.g. stellar abundances, ages) are then used to look for correlations with the measured planetary parameters. Implications of the results for the planet formation mechanisms are discussed.
