20 yr after SN 1987A, supernovae are of increased interest in the astrophysical context. Not only SNe are exceptional events involving not-fully-understood, interesting and complex physics (e.g. nucleosynthesis and combustion), but they are used as unmatched tools in several fields of astrophysics. A review is given on the role of SNe in probing the late stages of stellar evolution, for the study of the Circumstellar and Interstellar Medium, the determination of the reddening laws in external galaxies, the use as distance indicators, and in the determination of the history of Star Formation.
