The observed current accelerating expansion of the universe can be attributed to either the existence of a negative pressure energy component (dark energy) in the universe or to modifications of general relativity. The discovery of observational signatures that may distinguish between the two classes of theories is a major challenge for modern cosmology. Here I briefly discuss one such potential signature: The change of sign of the expression (d(H2(z)))/(dz) - 3Ω 0mH20(1+z)2 (where H(z is the Hubble parameter at redshift z) which is equivalent to an equation of state parameter w(z) crossing the w = - 1 line. I also review the current information provided by observational probes with respect to the above cosmological test.
