CRAIN et al.1 computed a power spectrum of the proportions of normal polarity measurements during the Phanerozoic, and their results were used as parameters for a stochastic model for geomagnetic reversals2. New data presented by McElhinny3 warrant a re-examination of the power spectrum of reversals during the Phanerozoic. Whereas Crain et al.1 used a hanning window in an attempt to minimize the end effects of the short record, a radically different approach, proposed by Burg4, is used in this note. The purpose of this letter is to point out the existence of a powerful new method for the analysis of short records.
