Some Martian atmospheric components exhibit isotopic mass fractionation indicative of significant early loss from the upper atmosphere; several physical models have been offered to account for volatile loss and mass fractionation. Measurements of Martian meteorites have revealed several aspects of nonatmospheric volatile elements. The oxygen isotopic composition of silicates differs from other solar system reservoirs.
